In the first broadcast of 2012, Karishmeh Felfeli explores lesser-known piano music from the Caucasus region as part of a profile on Iranian-American pianist Tara Kamangar who has devoted most of her professional life bringing this music to a larger audience. Tara also shares her own story, her musical insights and highlights from her career so far, which includes combining classical piano recitals with jazz-gypsy rock concerts. For Tara, a gifted pianist is also violinist with the Iranian band Kiosk. This profile and interview also features music from Tara Kamangar's brand new debut recording titled 'East of Melancholy: Piano Music from Russia to Iran'. The motivation behind this recording, and the musical selections featured on it are also explored in this radio broadcast.

Thought-Fox, winner of Music Network’s Young Musicwide Award for 2010-2013, is a serendipitous collaboration of some of the freshest improvisers on the Irish and UK jazz scene. The quintet’s often other-worldly compositions pivot around the powerful yet hauntingly gorgeous voice of Lauren Kinsella, who uses text and poetry to stunning effect alongside vocal techniques blending jazz, South Indian and European folk influences. Fellow foxes include trombonist Colm O’Hara, who has performed with luminaries such as Kenny Wheeler and Michael Brecker, and pianist Tom Gibbs, a stalwart of the Scottish jazz scene. This program is the second in a series of upcoming specials devised and produced by Karishmeh Felfeli and devoted to Glenn Gould between August 2011 and October 2012. On the eve of what would have been Glenn Gould's 79th Birthday, Offbeat presenter and Gould scholar Karishmeh Felfeli explores the Canadian man and musician whose work she has been researching for the past decade, and whose philosophies were instrumental in her own musical journey. In this intimate program, Karishmeh explores that side to Glenn Gould that is often glossed over, his empathetic, kind, good-natured, fun personality. Her guest on the program is Stephen Posen, a Toronto based lawyer, who was Glenn Gould's close friend, lawyer and who has been the Executor of the Estate of Glenn Gould since the time of the pianist's untimely death in 1982. Steve shares his thoughts on his friend, and also sheds some light on what he was like as a person, thereby debunking a lot of the common preconceptions people have about Glenn Gould. Karishmeh and Steve also discuss Gould's will and legacy, and its future for coming generations. The conversation is coloured by some musical examples - Bizet, Schoenberg, Beethoven, Liszt, Sibelius and Bach. Ultimately, this program is a simple tribute of sorts, shedding some light on Glenn Gould, human being extraordinaire, as opposed to the common perception of Gould as an "eccentric, musical genius."

Continuing from the last program which was based on a book set in Iran, for this program, Karishmeh speaks to Dublin-based pianist and composer Francesco Turrisi in about the Zahr Project.
The first part of the program features original compositions by Francesco Turrisi as well as an arrangement of a piece of music by Claudio Monteverdi. It also features a piece of music composed for the ensemble Yurodny and includes a preview of a work included on the forthcoming debut recording by the Zahr project. The second part of the program features Francesco Turrisi in conversation with Offbeat presenter Karishmeh Felfeli, and the discussion includes the inspiration behind the Zahr project (featuring Francesco Turrisi: piano, accordion, Khyam Allami: oud, Andrea Piccioni: percussion and Lucilla Galeazzi: vocals) as well as more about Francesco's own musical background and the various musical influences that have shaped his life and career.

British-born writer Nicholas Jubber, author of "Drinking Arak off an Ayatollah's Beard" talks to Karishmeh about his travels in Iran (and Afghanistan), Zoroastrianism, modern-day Iran as compared to pre-revolution Iran, as well as Jubber's interest in the Persian poet Ferdowsi, whose Shahnameh, provides much of the inspiration in the travel writer's own book. The program also features music from Iran, some of which is inspired by sections of the Shahnameh, while a lot of it spans a wide variety of genres and eras - from western classical and symphonic, to popular and rap.

In this edition of the program, Karishmeh introduces the Hungarian Ervin Nyiregyhazi, a forgotten pianist who was once hailed as a young Liszt, but a man who spent most of his life living in seedy Los Angeles neighbourhoods, too poor to own a piano! One of the last in a tradition of improvising, old-fashioned, romantic pianists, Nyiregyhazi is also the subject of Kevin Bazzana's second biography, "Lost Genius". The program features Karishmeh's conversation with Kevin Bazzana, as they discuss this now forgotten musical maverick. Bazzana also talks about the motivation behind both biographies, and his career as a non-academic writer (despite having a PhD, the subject of his dissertation being Glenn Gould), and his interest in talking about classical music to people from all walks of life.

OFFBEAT - created and presented by Karishmeh Felfeli

In past seasons, Offbeat has featured a mixture of legendary classical, world and contemporary artists (Leon Fleisher, Marni Nixon, Dave Davies, Zakir Hussain, Dame Evelyn Glennie, Byron Janis) with writers (Jaishree Misra), composers (David Carbonara of Mad Men fame) and the occasional program about nature, animals and compassionate living. Apart from the weekly eclectic mix of music and conversation, all chosen by pianist/singer Karishmeh Felfeli, the program has also featured specials on a range of subjects - from "Bollywood" to "Electronica" and "Americana" to "Fantasia". The next season of the program returns at the usual time of 9.00 p.m. GMT on Saturdays, and repeats on Tuesdays at 11.00 a.m. and features a typically unpredictable mix of documentaries, features, interviews and music specials. "Andrew Gold (1951 - 2011) - Lonely Boy" - A Musical tribute to one of popular music's most brilliant minds and underappreciated talents.

"On pianists and musical mavericks" - Kevin Bazzana, author of the definitive biography of Glenn Gould, and the remarkable biography of forgotten genius Ervin Nyíregyházi, discusses the golden age of piano playing, the subjects of his two biographies, and much more.

"Adventures in Iran" - Nicholas Jubber shares his experiences about travelling and living in contemporary Iran, being immersed in Ferdowsi's poetry, and Karishmeh Felfeli features some of the greatest historic and contemporary music from Iran.

ALSO IN SEPTEMBER - An actor from HBO's "The Wire", a legendary Goan musician, a French film-maker renowned for his films about great classical musicians, a Hollywood film composer, plus some of Ireland's most exciting young artists, musicians and performers. In Part One of the program, Offbeat presenter Karishmeh Felfeli profiles the blues/singer-songwriter Maria Daines, who along with guitarist Paul Killington, has used music to bring some attention to the plight of suffering animals the world over. In a frank and revealing interview, Maria Daines explains why even those who have no interest in animals, or have ever had a pet or had any contact with animals, should take an interest in some of the legislations that animal-welfare activists are actively protesting. She also describes her childhood experiences, and talks about how she rediscovered her passion for music, as well as the reasons she chooses to use her incredible singing voice for such a worthy, if unglamourous cause. All music featured in the program is by Maria Daines and Paul Killington.

Part Two of this program opens with "Animal Farm" by The Kinks - and features Karishmeh Felfeli in conversation with Rachel Cohen, an American University student who took it upon herself to tackle the desperately sad problem of homelessness on the streets of Philadelphia, especially amongst young people. She founded Hand2Paw, an organisation which helps not just homeless youth, but also Philadelphia's abandoned and abused shelter animals, who need loving volunteers to help them recover and be rehomed. Rachel Cohen's initiative involves getting homeless young people to volunteer at the city's animal shelters, learn some essential skills that give them a reason to get up in the morning, and empower them into giving something back. In her conversation with Karishmeh, Rachel reveals why the program is so important, and why it concerns any listener, whether they are in America or Ireland, or anywhere in the world. Since some of the greatest musicians of the future could very well be amongst these young people, Karishmeh Felfeli wanted to give Rachel the opportunity to talk about Hand2Paw, and how the lives of young people and animals are inextricably linked. The program closes with one final track, a rocking number by Maria Daines (profiled above).

To remember the songs and musical legacy of Singer and Songwriter Andrew Gold, Offbeat will broadcast an hour long feature about his life and music on 30th July, a couple of days before his Birthday. Andrew Gold would have been sixty this year, but his life was cut short when he passed away on June 3rd, a few short weeks ago.

Offbeat presenter/producer Karishmeh Felfeli, spoke at length to Andrew's mother, the legendary singer Marni Nixon a couple of years ago for a portrait on her life. To honour Gold's memory and to offer some solace for Marni and family, Karishmeh will present a program dedicated to Andrew Gold's work and music - from his superb pop songs to his collaborations with everyone from Lennon to Joni Mitchell, as well as his work as a film and television composer over the years. Marni Nixon has acknowledged that this is possibly the best and only way to remember the prolific musician and song-writer while also bringing his work to listeners who may not be so familiar with it. It may only be a small consolation to a woman who has already been through so much in her life, as well as to Andrew Gold's own family who are still reeling from their loss.

Andrew Gold - Lonely Boy - A Portrait for Radio will air on Saturday 30th July at 9.00 p.m. on 103.2 Dublin City FM.

The great American pianist Byron Janis (b. 1928) was a prodigy of the highest order. Born to a poor Polish-American family, he devoted most of his childhood and youth to piano studies. His teachers included Josef Hoffmann and Vladimir Horowitz. One of the last pianists keeping the tradition of the Golden Age of Piano Playing alive, Janis is living proof of triumph over adversity.
A lifelong battle with arthritis and several life experiences led him to scratch below the surface of life itself, to find out more about the truths that govern it. In 2010, he co-wrote his autobiography with his wife, Maria Cooper Janis, and titled it "Chopin and Beyond - my extraordinary life in music and the paranormal." Chopin forms a very important part of this great pianists' life, a life that is shaped by pain, unconditional love, spiritual awareness and the desire to be true to oneself. The book is a must-read, for music enthusiasts and those who have no knowledge of Western art music. It has also stimulated debate amongst readers, particularly those classical music fans who are not quite so open-minded or interested in the paranormal! Yet, Byron Janis has chosen to speak openly and truthfully about his life and all his diverse interests, irrespective of what people may think. He is also a spokesperson for the American Arthritis Foundation. For this reason, this edition of Offbeat is devoted to Byron Janis - and includes the great pianist in conversation with Karishmeh.

The first is Mick Kenny's superb Classic Rock program which broadcasts on Saturdays at 3.00 p.m. GMT. Unlike the majority of adult/contemporary/commercial rock music programs, Mick's show is a real labour of love, and this comes across on the airwaves. Each program is based on a word, or a theme of sorts, and it is so refreshing to hear blues, rock and roll, hard rock and alternative music that doesn't just feature the same tired playlists day after day, week after week. From obscure gems to absolute classics, this is a program any rock music fan will enjoy - there's a real warmth to the show that is all down to the presenter of the show - Mick Kenny (also known as MikTheWho). I've often said that I am as into classic rock (particularly music of the 60s and 70s) as I am into anything else, so I really love tuning in to this program - whether I'm volunteering at the local animal shelter, or tuning in from the library! Now listeners of Offbeat will know that I am not only passionate about music but also about nature, animals and the environment. So imagine my surprise when I found out about a program that broadcasts on the Irish language station Raidio na Life called Ceoil na Cruinne or music of the universe. I don't speak Irish, and I understand very little but I was fascinated to learn about a program that is presented by someone who is equally interested in the environment, and the world we inhabit. Plus, I have often received emails from people in India, Iran and Pakistan who speak very little English, but enjoy listening to Offbeat. Language is really not that important when it comes to a music radio program, and Ceoil na Cruinne is proof of this. Presented by Macdara Ó Maolbhuaidh each Sunday at 4.00 p.m. GMT and online, this is an absolute treat irrespective of what sort of music you enjoy. This evening, for instance, I listened to Abba, a Qawali favourite of my grandfather's and Mary O'Hara all in one program. Absolutely superb.

Iranian American Harpsichordist Mahan Esfahani featured in conversation with Karishmeh for a program that includes music by Scarlatti, Bach, Bull and Poulenc. The program opens with a historic recording of the great keyboardist Wanda Landowska performing the slow movement of Bach's Italian Concerto. After that, all the musical examples feature Mahan Esfahani and include his performances of J.S. The Age of Anxiety - Leonard Bernstein's Symphony No. 2

Following the huge listener response to Leonard Bernstein's introduction to Charles Ives' second symphony a few weeks ago, Karishmeh explores Bernstein's own second symphony, titled "The Age of Anxiety" in this edition of Offbeat. The Symphony, dedicated to Bernstein's teacher, mentor and friend, Serge Koussevitzky was premiered in 1949 with the composer on piano, and Koussevitzky conducting the Boston Symphony Orchestra.The first half of the program focuses on the background of the piece, the critical reception, and also provides a detailed explanation of the characters in Auden's poem, and the connection between the text and Bernstein's music, with musical examples illustrating the spoken introductions. The second half of the program features the Symphony in its entirety, so that the listener can experience and understand all that has been described in the first half.

Japanese-born pianist Izumi Kimura who is as comfortable playing classical piano repertoire as she is premiering new music by living Irish and Japanese composers, joins Karishmeh for a conversation about music and life. Describing her musical journey from her native country to her adopted one, Izumi Kimura discusses just why improvisation forms such an integral part of her piano performances and how working with jazz musicians and composers has changed her approach to classical piano repertoire. Her solo recording on the Diatribe label titled Asymmetry has been chosen by broadcaster Karishmeh Felfeli as "one of the most original, creative and stimulating recordings of 2010 to be heard on an Irish label, an absolute revelation."Some of the music from that record forms a part of this program, including piano music by Irish composer Ronan Guilfoyle and Japanese composers Takashi Yoshimatsu and Mamoru Fujieda.

Following the overwhelming response from regular and new Offbeat listeners after last November's unusual broadcast focussing around the story of Lennox, the dog from Belfast (more information on that program here), presenter Karishmeh Felfeli featured an update on the story on this edition of Offbeat. Along with music by Rachmaninov and Handel, performed by two great artists of our time, Sviatoslav Richter and Kathleen Ferrier, Karishmeh spoke to Caroline Barnes, Lennox's owner, and mother to 12 year old Brooke, the child most affected by the family's ordeal of the past ten months.

Karishmeh also gave her reasons for using her unique position as a radio broadcaster to highlight this story despite the fact that the program is a music one, and she is recognised mainly as a classical music presenter. In her own words "I cannot use the fact that I am just a music presenter as an excuse to turn a blind eye to this deeply upsetting story of an innocent family being punished beyond belief. I am very grateful to Dublin City FM for allowing me to use my music program to get this story on air. " Karishmeh also mentions the many classical composers who were all as fond of their own animals, amongst them Sergei Rachmaninov and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

2010 featured some of the world's most prolific musicians, composers and artists in conversation with Karishmeh on Offbeat. It was also a year where young musicians and up and coming artists were given the opportunity to talk about their own lives and music. The year began with a typically eclectic program that featured music by Leadbelly and The Kinks alongside Mendelssohn and Schubert. Over the course of the year, we heard radio features on a wide variety of subjects, from Nannerl Mozart, the sister of Wolfgang Amadeus, to Oliver Sacks' book Musicophilia, Music and Religion, Composers and their muses, Armenian musicians & composers, Piano Duo Music, another Bollywood music special, The Mix Tape special, Vedanta and the music of Alice Coltrane and much more. Amidst these features and specials, Offbeat also featured the more regular programming of some of the best classical, contemporary, jazz, rock and world music.

David Carbonara, Composer - Mad Men

A host of wonderful guests brought their own musical backgrounds to the year's programs. 60s Guitarist and founder of The Kinks, Dave Davies opened up about his own spiritual journey to Karishmeh, while David Carbonara, composer on the hit AMC series Mad Men talked about his early years as a struggling musician in New York. Pakistani born sufi rock guitarist, singer and composer Salman Ahmad of sufi-rock band Junoon shared his thoughts on "rock and roll jihad" amongst other things, while two young Armenian musicians, violinist Ani Batikian and jazz pianist/composer Vardan Ovsepian spoke about how war had always been part of their childhood growing up in Armenia. Speaking of jazz, the brilliant David Rees Williams, of the David Rees Williams Trio shared his thoughts on everything from playing Bach to teaching a new generation of musicians.

Keeping with Karishmeh's own background, two vivacious Indian-born women who have made their mark in the arts world were featured extensively on the program. Soprano Patricia Rozario (OBE) who spoke about her childhood musical experiences in Bombay and Goa, as well as what it meant being a muse for both John Tavener and Arvo Part. Acclaimed writer Jaishree Misra spoke about her critically acclaimed books, as well as her more recent, popular novels while also sharing her favourite music from Bollywood. The Pianist Ivan Ilic spoke about the challenge of learning and recording Godowsky's remarkable transcriptions of the Chopin Etudes for left hand only, amongst other things, and the great Canadian duo pianist James Anagnoson (also Dean of the Royal Conservatory of Music's Glenn Gould School) spoke about the realities of life in a professional piano duo, in his case, the Anagnoson-Kinton Piano Duo. The last program of the year was dedicated to those less fortunate, to anyone who was having a difficult time over Christmas, and in true Offbeat style, it featured music by Orlando Gibbons and Max Bruch alongside The Rolling Stones, Moondog and Vince Guaraldi.

To give Offbeat fans and listeners a glimpse into what might be in store in 2011, there will be the usual mix of classical masterpieces (in old and new recordings), alongside the best in contemporary, electroacoustic and world music, sprinkled with a few favourite tunes from the jazz, classic rock and folk repertory. In features and interviews this year, Dave Davies makes a return along with his son, Russ Davies of the Cinnamon Chasers, to discuss their brand new Aschere Project and the realities of working together! More specials this year will feature Maud MacCarthy, the remarkable violinist and wife of English composer John Foulds, the celebrated English pianist Paul Lewis, known for his astonishing recordings of Beethoven and Schubert, Daniel Licht, composer on the Showtime series Dexter, remarkable Jazz Pianist Yaron Herman, compassionate singer-songwriter Maria Daines, rising star pianist, harpsichordist and organist, the Persian Mahan Esfahani, author and historian William Dalrymple. And that's just some of what Offbeat listeners can look forward to over the coming months.

Even though the show features music by Domenico Scarlatti, Gustav Mahler, William Byrd, Edward Elgar, Sarah McLachlan, Nina Simone and Bryan Adams, the entire program is dedicated to a very special family from Belfast, Northern Ireland and their much loved dog Lennox who has spent over six months suffering under the hands of Belfast City Council. The program also features the Irish radio premiere of a song by singer-songwriter Maria Daines written especially for Lennox. Lennox's next hearing takes place on 23rd November - here's what you can do to ensure this innocent dog is not murdered by Belfast City Council.

Later in the program, Patricia talks to Karishmeh about her childhood in Mumbai, her first singing teacher, leaving India to study at the Guildhall, and about establishing proper music teaching programs for students in India. Listeners who are familiar with Patricia's recordings of the music of Arvo Part and Sir John Tavener are in for a treat as the soprano tells us how both composers began working with her and writing for her. Patricia has worked with the Louth Contemporary Music Society and she discusses her connection with Ireland. In this week's program on Offbeat Karishmeh explores the purpose and goal of Vedanta, through the writings and work of the 19th Century thinker Swami Vivekananda. Vedanta has influenced numerous Western figures including T.S. Eliot, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Romain Rolland, Aldous Huxley and many, many more. This program features the music of the incredible American jazz pianist and composer Alice Coltrane (wife of the legendary jazz saxophonist John Coltrane).

Alice was deeply influenced by Vedanta, and her own music post 1975 reflected this.

OFFBEAT with Karishmeh features the music of film and television composer DAVID CARBONARA, who is currently scoring the original series Mad Men for the AMC network, written and created by Matthew Weiner. As Mad Men returns for its fourth season, Karishmeh speaks to David Carbonara about working on this brilliant television series, and also talks to the composer about life before Mad Men.

In the first part of the show Karishmeh takes a look at the earlier music of David Carbonara including his work on the independent films Spanking the Monkey (written and directed by David O. Russell) , The Young Girl and the Monsoon, Queenie in Love and more mainstream hits such as The Guru and the critically acclaimed documentary Giuliani Time.

The second half of the show features David Carbonara's original music for Mad Men including "The Men of Stirling Cooper" and the hauntingly beautiful "Carousel". Most of the second half of the show features the composer in conversation with Karishmeh.

From Yerevan to Glasgow via London- the gifted violinist Ani Batikian is one of Armenia's most successful musicians. Combining a career as a concert performer with that of a chamber musician and teacher at Glasgow's Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, Offbeat profiles the extraordinary depth, innate musicianship and gorgeous tone of this beautiful violinist. Ani also talks to Karishmeh about her own musical journey, growing up in Yerevan and the vibrant musical scene in Glasgow. She describes the realities of working as a musician in a world where selling and marketing oneself as a musician is as important (if not more so) than one's talent and ability.

The music featured on the program includes the violin/piano arrangement of Rachmaninov's exquisite "Vocalise", the "Dance" for violin by the great Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian, and the third movement of Maurice Ravel's "Sonata for Violin and Piano" - all live recordings by Ani Batikian.

Vardan's own music is a gorgeous mix of jazz infused with a distinctive Armenian voice, and his piano playing, particularly his improvisational style is both highly articulate, and extremely intuitive.In the course of this program, Vardan discusses his own musical upbringing, the realities of growing up in a country filled with culture, but tormented by war, his journey via Scandanavia to America, and his future plans and ambitions.

In "Back from Before", David Rees Williams, Neil Francis and Phil Laslett are equally at home performing some of the most treasured works from the classical music repertoire such as Mozart's Ave Verum to more obscure gems by S.S. Wesley and Gibbons. Once again it is the subtlety in the playing, and the exquisite sense of musical direction that makes this record a complete revelation and one of my favourite records of 2010.

The English pianist David Rees Williams talks to Karishmeh about setting up the David Rees Williams Trio in 1988 with Neil Francis on Electric Bass and Phil Laslett on Drums. He also discusses all the music that the Trio choose to record and perform, and the musical inspiration behind the Trio's music. In the first part of the program, Karishmeh plays some of her favourite tracks from the Trio's discography that includes the stunning "When I am Laid in Earth" by Purcell, some Scarlatti, Bach and even music from their brand new record "Back from Before". After the break, David Rees Williams is in conversation with Karishmeh and in his own unassuming way, he reveals just some of the ideas behind his work with the Trio. As Clive Davis from the Sunday Times said when reviewing the Trio ‘Rees-Williams can cast a Bach prelude in exotic colours, but he and his colleagues are equally at home with Scarlatti, Grieg and Cesar Franck - they deserve a wider audience among jazz fans and classical diehards.’
